QUOTE OF THE DAY

“It makes you miss me” - Will Ferrell as George W. Bush on SNL, talking about the Republican presidential candidates. You stay classy, Dubya.

CAPTAIN PLANET

THE STORY

Over the weekend, pretty much every country in the world reached a landmark climate deal in Paris. Gas, passed.

GIMME SOME BACKGROUND.

Because Mother Earth’s been feeling the effects of global warming (think: rising sea levels, droughts), world leaders have been trying to shake on a climate deal for decades. This deal went down at the end of the UN climate change conference - kinda like the environmental World Cup (psst, here’s your Skimm).

SO WHAT’S IN THE DEAL?

An agreement from nearly 200 countries to cut greenhouse gas emissions. Also checked off the to-do list: an agreement to keep global temps in check, and a pledge of $100 billion a year to help developing countries meet their goals.

WHAT ARE PEOPLE SAYING?

President Obama called it “the most ambitious climate change agreement in history.” French President Hollande called the deal “beautiful,” since it was sick of being called hot. Who’s not celebrating? The GOP, which is worried about how many jobs will get cut in industries like coal, with some members unsure about how much human activity influences global warming.

This is the first time this many developing countries — which are hit hardest by natural disasters caused by climate change — have pledged to cut emissions. Big deal, since they’ve been reluctant in the past to pay up to make changes. This time, they’re thinking the green juice is worth the squeeze.

REPEAT AFTER ME...

WHAT TO SAY WHEN YOUR FANTASY FOOTBALL TEAM FINALLY WINS A GAME…

Slow clap. Over the weekend, Saudi Arabian women were allowed to vote and run for office for the first time in the country’s history. The good news? At least a dozen women won seats in local councils. The bad news? Any woman who chose to vote had to get a lift to the polls. Saudi Arabian women still aren’t allowed to drive, and aren’t allowed to travel outside the country without a man giving them the OK. This weekend’s election doesn’t mean much when it comes to political changes — the country’s still a conservative monarchy. But the election is a big step for women’s rights in a country where the phrase ‘women’s rights’ didn’t really exist a few years ago.

WHAT PEOPLE ARE WATCHING…

Over the weekend, two police officers shot and killed a black man near Los Angeles . According to police, they were responding to calls about shots fired. When they arrived at the scene, police say the suspect - 28-year-old Nicholas Robertson - refused to drop his gun. A video of the shooting shows the officers firing at Robertson multiple times as he appears to crawl away. After the shooting, people gathered at the scene to protest the unjustified way they believe he was killed, reportedly yelling “no more stolen lives.” Officials are investigating the incident, which comes after a series of police-involved shootings across the country that have put police brutality and alleged discrimination in the spotlight.

WHAT TO SAY WHEN YOU FIND THE PERFECT UGLY SWEATER FOR YOUR HOLIDAY PARTY…

Mine. On Friday, Alibaba looked at the South China Morning Post and said ‘I’ll take it.’ Alibaba: Chinese e-commerce giant. South China Morning Post: English language newspaper based out of Hong Kong – a semi-autonomous region that allows free speech, which China isn’t so into. The paper has a rep for covering controversial things like those massive umbrella protests in HK last year . Meanwhile, Alibaba’s trying to generate some good PR for its hometown. The company says it’s buying the paper in hopes of creating a more positive image of China. To which some are saying ‘hmm sounds a lot like influencing editorial decisions.’ But Alibaba’s saying ‘not so,’ it won’t interfere with editorial decisions at the paper. Glad that’s settled.

WHAT PEOPLE ARE SADDENED BY…

Sandy Hook. Today is the third anniversary of the mass shooting at the elementary school in Newtown, CT that killed 20 students and six adults.

WHAT TO SAY WHEN YOU CAN’T BELIEVE IT’S ALREADY MONDAY…

Nothing lasts forever. Just ask Steph Curry.

THING TO KNOW

Derrick Henry: University of Alabama running back and this year’s Heisman Trophy winner. Aka the prom queen of college football. He’s the first running back to get the crown since 2009.
