QUOTE OF THE DAY

It might be three to six months before I can eat an apple” — UFC fighter Ronda Rousey, on her post-knockout recovery. Turns out when your face is hit repeatedly, apples become fruitless.

NO FLY, NO DICE

THE STORY

Yesterday, Connecticut’s gov had a mic drop moment. He said the state is working to ban people on the no-fly list from buying guns.

BACK UP.

This month’s mass shooting in San Bernardino, CA put the gun control debate back in the spotlight in a big way. It also put Americans on edge about national security. Which is why lots of people said ‘excuse me, what?’ when they found out that people on the federal no-fly list can buy guns. In an Oval Office address, President Obama asked Congress to change this rule. Crickets.

WHAT’S THE ISSUE?

The people on the ‘more gun control, please’ side are saying ‘hi, is this a joke? How can we let anyone we think could have ties to terrorism get their hands on a gun?’ The people on the ‘get your paws off my guns’ side of the debate say the no-fly list isn’t always accurate, and can end up just taking away Second Amendment rights from law-abiding citizens.

SO WHAT NOW?

Through executive order, Connecticut could become one of the first states to pass gun control legislation that gives no love to the no-fly list. It’s not the first time the state has taken a stance on guns; after the Sandy Hook shooting three years ago, the state passed stricter gun laws -making it one of the toughest states on gun control in the US.

While some states consider making changes on their own, the White House is reportedly prepping a new executive action that would expand background checks on gun purchases. You can expect some opinions on that one. PS: Welcome to an election year.

REPEAT AFTER ME...

WHAT TO SAY WHEN YOU DON’T HAVE TIME TO GRAB FOOD IN THE AM...

“Serial” for breakfast. Yesterday, season 2 of everyone’s favorite podcast surprise dropped, Beyonce-style. This season focuses on the story-slash-mystery of Sgt. Bowe Bergdahl, who may or may not be Brody IRL. He’s that US soldier who walked away from his post and was held captive by the Taliban. Ever since his release was negotiated by President Obama last year, there have been questions over why he left his post and whether he was a deserter. He was later  charged by the Armyand the case is ongoing. Now, Sarah Koenig’s on it...to the tune of ‘Mail..kimp?’

WHAT TO SAY WHEN YOUR FRIEND ASKS IF ANYTHING CAME FROM THOSE CLIMATE TALKS

Outlook hazy, try again later. Congress is also being unclear about what it’s getting done. Today, Congress has a deadline to pass a spending bill. And as of yesterday, Congress was nowhere near passing a spending bill. Good times. Instead, it looks like they’re passing a temporary measure to push the deadline until next week. Because who doesn’t love working late the last week before Christmas? Reminder: in the fall, Congress passed a last-minute deal to fund the gov...through today. The holdup then? Arguments over things like whether Congress should defund Planned Parenthood. But after last month’s shooting at a Planned Parenthood clinic in Colorado Springs, CO, it looks like that fight is on pause. The holdup now? Arguments over things like funding for gun violence research. If Congress can’t agree on the fine print of this $1.1 trillion spending bill, it could be lights out in DC. Again.

WHAT TO SAY WHEN YOU REALIZE BEN AFFLECK HAS A FULL BACK TATTOO...

In other sad news…yesterday, Kristin Cavallari’s 30-year-old brother Michael was found dead. He’d been missing for nearly two weeks, after his abandoned car was found. Police say he was arrested days before he went missing. You know Kristin as the one in the jean skirt on MTV’s “Laguna Beach.” She’s now married to Chicago Bears QB Jay Cutler and has three kids. There’s no word on how her brother died, but investigators are looking into what happened.

WHAT TO SAY WHEN YOU HEAR “TRANSPARENT” SEASON 2 IS OUT…

Back with a bang. Bang meaning three Golden Globe nominations . Yesterday, the noms came out for TV and film’s prom night. Who might be getting lucky? “Carol” - starring Cate Blanchett and Lisbeth Salander as lovers - got the most noms. Movies like “The Big Short,” “Room,” and “Trainwreck” should also be on your watch list. On the TV side, Aziz Ansari, Don Draper, and even Lady Gaga are up for some gold. Who got ghosted? Broadcast TV. “Empire” was one of the only broadcast shows up for a top prize, while basically all the shows you binge on Netflix got nods. Just keep streaming, just keep streaming.
