QUOTE OF THE DAY

“We are on a one-year payment plan for the painting. If we had to pay cash upfront, that would be a little difficult for us” — The couple who spent $170.4 million for a painting by Amedeo Modigliani at an auction last week. They paid with American Express. For the points.

MANHUNT

THE STORY

Authorities raided a Paris suburb this morning in the hunt for terrorists involved in the recent attacks.

CATCH ME UP.

French President Hollande has said ISIS is responsible for last Friday’s coordinated terror attacks in Paris that left 129 people dead, and more than 350 injured. Seven of the attackers died, and there has been an EU-wide manhunt going on for two other suspects.

WHAT HAPPENED THIS MORNING?

Police raided an apartment looking for those involved in the attacks. At least two people were killed, including a woman who blew herself up, and seven people were arrested. Officials really wanted to find Abdelhamid Abaaoud, the Belgian guy who they think organized the attacks. Unclear if they did.

ANYTHING ELSE?

Yesterday, two Air France planes going from the US to Paris were diverted because of bomb threats. Nothing was found on board either of them. Also yesterday, House Speaker Paul Ryan (R-WI) said the US should hit “pause” on accepting Syrian refugees. That’s because one of the Paris attackers may have used a fake Syrian passport  to get into the EU along with other refugees, and Ryan’s worried about security risks. This comes after, earlier this week, almost half of US states said ‘hard pass’ to Syrian refugees for the same reason. Critics are pointing out that the vast majority of Syrian refugees are non-violent, and escaping things like terrorism themselves.

There are still lots more questions than answers about what happened in Paris last week. Next, Hollande is flying to both the US and Russia to try to get everyone to work together in the fight against ISIS.

THE *: There are a lot of names out there for ISIS. That’s why we Skimm’d it for you.

REPEAT AFTER ME...

WHAT TO SAY WHEN YOUR BOSS CALLS YOU OUT IN AN EMAIL TO THE WHOLE COMPANY…

Things just got personal. Yesterday, The Wall Street Journal reported that US officials are trying to bring criminal charges against specific execs from the Royal Bank of Scotland and JPMorgan Chase. Apparently, the feds haven’t forgotten about that little disaster called the financial crisis. Back in ’08, banks were accused of selling bad mortgages as investments. Both RBS and JPMorgan ended up writing big settlement checks to the US gov. to make the charges against them go away. But many have criticized the Obama administration for not making those responsible wear orange jumpsuits. Now, US prosecutors are reportedly trying to prove that at least one RBS banker and two at JPMorgan sold mortgages that they knew were shady. Why now? It could have something to do the 10-year limit for prosecuting the people involved.

WHAT TO SAY TO YOUR FRIEND WHO USES TWO-STEP VERIFICATION…

Microsoft wants to get on your level. Yesterday, Microsoft said it’s starting to step up its cybersecurity game. Great news, since the company’s software is on almost all PCs. Now, Microsoft is getting serious about fixing that. The plan includes a team of quick-response experts to tackle new threats, and reportedly work more closely with friendly hackers who find security holes in Microsoft’s products. This comes after a series of high-profile hacks ( hellooooooo Sony) have put cybersecurity at the top of company to-do lists. It also doesn’t help that archrival Apple has been advertising how much better it is at cybersecurity than Microsoft. Cue another round of Mac vs. PC commercials.

WHAT TO SAY WHEN YOU CAN’T STOP ARGUING WITH A CO-WORKER…

On this, there is no debate. David Beckham certainly is this year’s Sexiest Man Alive. Rawr.

THING TO KNOW

ISIS is the Snoop Lion of terror groups. Always changing to a worse name. That’s why we Skimm’d it down for you.
