Today, world leaders are in Paris for a big work retreat. On the agenda: getting a climate change deal signed, sealed, and delivered.

More than 120 world leaders — including President Obama, German Chancellor Merkel, Chinese President Xi Jinping – are gearing up for two weeks of talks. In the end, they’re aiming to ink a deal that would, for the first time ever, commit almost the entire world to passing a LOT less greenhouse gas.

SO...PARIS?

Oui. After this month’s terror attacks in the city, leaders decided not to cancel the summit. But there is a ton of extra security, and things like concerts and demonstrations planned by activist groups were scrapped from the schedule. Except it seems the demonstrators didn’t get the memo. Yesterday, hundreds of thousands of people around the world marched to put pressure on leaders to come to an agreement. I n Paris, hundreds of people demonstrated, ignoring official warnings not to meet. More than 200 people were arrested after clashing with riot police.

ANYTHING ELSE?

It looks like Bill Gates and his billionaire buddies will make a cameo. Today, Gates is expected to announce a new, multi-billion dollar clean energy fund, along with last names like Zuckerberg and Bezos. The cash will reportedly go toward helping developing countries (think: India, China) go green.

After years and years of negotiating, this summit is the finish line. But finishing under pressure is hard, and Obama‘s big legacy fear is that he’ll end up soft on climate change. And nothing kills a mood faster than the threat of being derailed by Congress back at home. To be continued.

WHAT TO SAY WHEN YOUR CABLE’S OUT AND YOUR TEAM IS IN OVERTIME…

Help a neighbor out? Yesterday, the EU and Turkey agreed on a way to help deal with the ongoing migrant and refugee crisis. So far this year, about 1.5 million migrants and refugees have entered the EU. Many are fleeing war zones and others are just looking for a better life (psst…here’s your Skimm ). The EU has been freaking out about how to deal with the flood of people. It didn’t help that one of the suspects in this month’s Paris terror attacks allegedly came to the EU posing as a migrant. Insert more EU panic attacks. Meanwhile, Turkey’s been dealing with its own drama, like that Russian warplane it shot down last week, and the sanctions Russia put on the country as a punishment. Yesterday, Turkey – where a lot of migrants and refugees are passing through to get to the EU – agreed to help. But Turkey doesn’t work for free; it agreed to tighten its border control and encourage some of the people to stay in the country, in exchange for some dolla dolla bills. $3 billion bills and new chats about Turkey joining the EU.

WHAT PEOPLE ARE TALKING ABOUT…

Planned Parenthood. Last Friday, a gunman killed three people and injured nine others when he attacked a Planned Parenthood clinic in Colorado. One of the victims was a police officer. After leading police in a six-hour standoff, the suspect was arrested and reportedly said “no more baby parts,” apparently referencing controversial videos released by an anti-abortion group earlier this year. Refresher: the undercover videos seem to show Planned Parenthood execs talking about selling fetal tissue for profit. It’s legal to be reimbursed for selling fetal tissue to research, but it’s illegal to profit from it. Which Planned Parenthood says it definitely doesn’t. But the controversy has put the organization in a very uncomfortable spotlight, with some states moving to defund it. Police are still trying to figure out what the suspect’s motive might have been, but yesterday Planned Parenthood said he was “motivated by opposition to safe and legal abortion.”

WHAT TO SAY WHEN YOU HEAR ADELE’S NEW ALBUM SAID ‘BYE BYE BYE’ TO THE *NSYNC RECORD…

Hello, it’s me. If you’re thinking the NSA heard that, they didn’t. Over the weekend, the NSA ended its phone surveillance program. The controversial program started after 9/11, but no one really knew about it until a certain Schmedward Schmoden came along. Earlier this year, Congress passed a law that said the NSA had to stop the program on Saturday at midnight before it turned into a pumpkin. It’s a big victory for people who are saying ‘ever heard of privacy?’ and for companies that weren’t too happy about the idea of Uncle Sam looking over their shoulders. But it’s a loss for some people who think a little phone spying might be necessary to keep America safe. As of today, the NSA’s surveillance program will target specific people or groups, rather than your mom’s calls to see if you’re dating anyone.
