QUOTE OF THE DAY

“You can put the timer on, really set it up, and take your selfie” – Kylie Jenner on the selfie station she has set up in her “glam room.” Otherwise known as a bathroom.

CIAO CIAO

THE STORY

Yesterday, Italian officials said ‘leave the cannoli, take the suspected terrorist.’ They headed an operation that led to the arrests of more than a dozen people across Europe with links to ISIS.

CATCH ME UP.

ISIS has been public enemy #1 for more than a year. The US & friends have been fighting an ongoing battle against the terror group in Iraq and Syria. But they’ve also been on the lookout for would-be terrorists inside Europe’s borders.

SO WHAT’S THE LATEST?

The suspects arrested yesterday were part of an online network in Europe that recruits fighters and plans attacks. They allegedly wanted to overthrow the Kurds in Iraq – a semi-autonomous ethnic group that’s been a key US ally in the fight against ISIS. The plan was to replace them with a government ruled by Islamic extremists. Which now, might be a little difficult to do from prison.

Italian police called this the “most important international police operation in Europe in 20 years.” One step forward. But yesterday, ISIS claimed responsibility for twin suicide bombings that killed dozens of people in Beirut. One step back.

REPEAT AFTER ME...

WHAT TO SAY WHEN YOU START EATING YOUR ICE CREAM TOPPINGS BEFORE YOU PAY…

Damn it feels good to be a gangsta. Yesterday, Vincent Asaro was acquitted of charges that he’d helped plan the the airport heist that inspired “Goodfellas.” Refresher: in 1978, $6 million in cash and jewelry was stolen from a Lufthansa airlines hangar at JFK airport in NYC. It was one of the biggest heists in US history, but we never found out whodunnit. Decades later, Asaro was recorded apparently complaining that he never got his share of the cash. He was charged in the robbery – but also with a laundry list of other crimes like murder, extortion, and arson (from his years as an alleged Mafioso). Asaro pleaded not guilty, and his defense argued that the case relied on others who had a lot to gain by framing him. Others who clearly don’t know to never rat on their friends, and always keep their mouths shut.

WHAT TO SAY WHEN YOUR FAMILY’S ARGUING ABOUT WHO SHOULD HOST THANKSGIVING...

Everybody has an opinion. Yesterday, a Utah juvenile court judge ordered a baby to be taken from her same-sex foster parents. According to the parents, the judge reasoned that it’s better for children to be raised by hetero couples. Which made a lot of people go ‘hmmmm.’ Including Utah’s Republican governor, who said he was “puzzled” by the decision and that the judge “may not like the law, but he should follow the law.”  After the Supremes legalized same-sex marriage in the US earlier this year, it became legal for same-sex married couples in Utah to be foster parents. The unexpected move came during what was supposed to be a routine hearing. The state’s child services agency is hoping to challenge the order.

WHAT TO SAY WHEN YOU’RE ON A FIRST DATE WITH SOMEONE YOU MET ONLINE...

You don’t look like your picture. Yesterday, In-N-Out Burger sued food delivery startup DoorDash for delivering Double Downs without permission.  In-N-Out says it has asked DoorDash nicely many times to stop, since the deliveries aren’t up to the “standards” that In-N-Out fans are used to. Specifically, the fast food chain doesn’t like not being able to control the “temperature” or “handling” of its burgers during the delivery process. DoorDash says it’s service is just fine, thanks. In-N-Out also claims that its logo is being used in a way that makes it seem like the two companies are in a partnership. Which, in case you were still wondering, they most definitely are not.

SKIMM READS

Skimm’ologist says: sip on a Caramel Brulée Latte in honor of the holiday season and this read

“City on Fire” by Garth Risk Hallberg

This debut novel was the subject of a major bidding war among publishers. It’s set in NYC in the 1970s, and follows the sibling heirs to one of the city’s oldest and richest families. Find out how they – and the people around them – are connected to a shooting on New Year’s Eve. It’s a long read, but worth it.
