QUOTE OF THE DAY

“Hi, what’s your name?” – UFC fighter Holly Holm meeting Jay Z’s wife.

COLD TURKEY

THE STORY

Yesterday, things got a lot more complicated in Syria.

GIMME SOME BACKGROUND.

The Syrian civil war has been going on for over four years. Russia has been trying to help Syrian President Assad stay in power; the US and friends (like Turkey) have been trying to get Assad out of power and help the rebels trying to oust him. Meanwhile, ISIS has had a great time flourishing in the war torn country. No one likes ISIS, which is why Russia has recently joined the fight to try and get rid of the group. Which it does some of the time; other times, it’s also targeting the plain ol’ rebels going after Assad. After this month’s Paris attacks, the world was hoping everyone would put their differences aside and work together  to defeat ISIS in the region once and for all.

WHAT HAPPENED YESTERDAY?

Turkey shot down a Russian warplane near the Turkish-Syrian border. One of the pilots is dead, and Russia says the other was rescued. And according to Russia, a marine was also shot and killed by rebel groups as he tried to rescue the pilots. Officially, Turkey says this was about Russia violating its airspace. But Russia says its plane never crossed into Turkey’s airspace. Unofficially, it’s much more complicated.

WHAT HAPPENED TO MY TURKEY?

You’ll eat it tomorrow. Things between Russia and Turkey have been pretty strained. In their spare time, Assad’s forces — supported by Russia — have also been fighting a rebel group that’s good friends with Turkey. According to Turkey, ISIS doesn’t even operate in the region where the plane was downed yesterday, and they think this rebel group was Russia’s real target and it was just hiding behind the ISIS excuse.

NOW WHAT?

Well, Putin called the incident a “stab in the back,” and said Turkey’s actions will have “serious consequences.” But President Obama said Turkey’s allowed to defend its territory. Turkey called for an emergency NATO meeting.

Right now there are a lot of cooks in the Syrian kitchen bumping into each other on the ground and in the air. Making an already complicated global crisis that much more difficult. Meanwhile, yesterday was believed to be the first time a NATO country took down a Russian plane in 50 years. Happy holidays.

REPEAT AFTER ME...

WHAT TO SAY WHEN YOUR DAD SAYS HE DROPPED ONE OF THE PIES...

Well, sh*t. Chicago hears you. The city is on edge after yesterday, a white police officer there was charged with first-degree murder in the death of a black teen last year. The charges came just hours before a graphic police video of the incident was released. It shows 17-year-old Laquan McDonald , who officials say was on a hallucinogenic drug, ignoring officers pursuing him and jogging in the street while carrying a small knife. Then, an officer shoots him...16 times. According to the state attorney, many of those shots happened after McDonald was already on the ground. Officials announced the charges and released the video at the same time, to try to avoid the kind of unrest that hit Ferguson, MO last year. Last night, hundreds of peaceful protesters were out in the streets of Chicago – saying the investigation shouldn’t have taken over a year to complete.

WHAT TO SAY WHEN YOUR MOM SAYS THE TURKEY’S ALMOST READY...

I’ll take mine well done. Yesterday, the CDC announced that at least 19 people in seven states are sick with E. coli. The culprit? Costco chicken salad. The CDC says that so far, at least five people have been hospitalized and two have kidney failure. E. coli: a bacteria that can cause food poisoning and sometimes lead to a serious infection. For most people, that means some QT in the bathroom – but it can get particularly bad for little kids and grandparents. This comes after everyone’s favorite food sample destination was linked to a recent salmonella outbreak - again having to do with its chicken. Costco says it’s stopped selling the chicken salad while the feds investigate. Good idea.

WHAT TO SAY WHEN YOU ANNOUNCE TO THE FAM THAT YOU GOT A NEW JOB, AND THEN YOUR COUSIN SAYS SHE’S PREGNANT...

Who are you, Elon Musk? Yesterday, the Space X founder and CEO got a liiiiittle competitive with fellow billionaire, Amazon founder and CEO Jeff Bezos. Bezos also has his own space company, Blue Origin. And yesterday, Blue Origin sent a rocket to the edge of space and back with a controlled landing. BFD, since Blue Origin is hoping to eventually use the tech to send people to space and back. Yesterday, Bezos celebrated, calling the rocket landing the “rarest of beasts.” Which Musk said, ‘hi, remember me?’ He responded by pointing out that the landing wasn’t so rare – his company did the same thing three years ago. So no, it seems not all is gravy.

WHAT TO SAY TO WHEN YOUR MOTHER-IN-LAW ASKS YOU TO TRY HER NEW STUFFING RECIPE...

I’ll skip it. Along with Tunisia. Yesterday, the country declared it’s at “war” with terrorism after at least 12 people were killed when there was an explosion on a bus carrying member’s of the president’s entourage.

WHAT TO SAY TO YOUR AUNT WHO USED TO RECORD “ALL MY CHILDREN” ON THE VCR...

Very sorry about David Canary

WHAT TO SAY WHEN THERE ARE EXTRA MARSHMALLOWS ON THE SWEET POTATOES...

In other life changing news, this is what the guy who voiced “Hey Arnold!” looks like now.

SKIMM'R OF THE WEEK

SKIMM READS

“Orphan Train” by Christina Baker Kline

Sounds really depressing, but it’s a page-turner that highlights a part of US history you had no idea existed, and it’s worth the read. It flashbacks between the backstory of a 91-year-old woman’s life as an orphan and the modern story of a teen in foster care. When all else fails, recommend it to your annoying family friend after Thursday’s dessert.

SKIMM WINE

Skimm’ologist says: this red blend pairs well with this heavy and addicting read.
