SHOULD I BRING OUT MY SNOW BOOTS?

Depends on where you live. DC and Baltimore are supposed to get hit the hardest. DC is expecting up to two feet of snow starting tonight, something the city hasn’t seen for years. The mayor there already apologized for the city’s “inadequate response” to this week’s light dusting that basically shut down the city. Bodes well. If you live in Baltimore, you should consider sledding to the grocery store. And if you live in the Philadelphia, New York City and Boston areas you should at least take your parka out of the closet. Thousands of flights have already been canceled across the country, and milk and bread are now as popular as hoverboards.

WHAT TO SAY WHEN YOUR OFFICE RIVAL KEEPS ‘FORGETTING’ TO CC YOU...

It could be worse. Yesterday, a UK judge said two Russian men are guilty of poisoning a former KGB spy, and that Russian President Putin “probably” approved the killing. In 2006, Alexander Litvinenko was poisoned when radioactive polonium was slipped into his tea in a London hotel. Litvinenko had been hanging out in the UK for years, where he did things like accuse Putin of having links to organized crime, and feed Russian secrets to the intelligence officials in the UK. Putin no likey. After a long, high-profile investigation, the UK judge said yesterday that the two men killed Litvinenko on orders from Russia’s security services, who’d probably gotten the go-ahead from Putin. British PM David Cameron called the report “extremely disturbing,” while a Putin spokesman said the investigation was rigged, and that it would “further poison the atmosphere” for the two countries. Interesting choice of words.

WHAT TO SAY TO YOUR COUSIN TRYING TO DECIDE WHERE TO STUDY ABROAD...

Can we agree to skip North Korea? Earlier today, North Korea announced it’s got a US student in custody. 21-year-old Otto Frederick Warmbier apparently decided New Year’s Eve in Pyongyang couldn’t be missed, and was arrested on Jan. 2 on his way out of the country. NK says the University of Virginia student was “caught committing a hostile act against the state” which was “tolerated and manipulated by the US government” in order to “destroy the country’s unity.” That is all. After several face-palms, the US State Department is now reportedly working on getting him back.

WHAT TO SAY TO YOUR FRIEND WHO USES PURELL BEFORE EVERY MEAL...

I’ll have some too. US health officials say they’re launching an “all hands on deck” push to develop a vaccine for the Zika virus. Zika virus: you get it from a mosquito bite, and it comes with symptoms like fever, a rash, and joint pain. It can also cause birth defects in infants. This year in Brazil, thousands of babies were born with abnormally small heads after the virus was passed to them from their mothers. In other cases, patients have been almost completely paralyzed for weeks at a time. Recently, the virus has spread around Latin America and parts of the Caribbean, and cases were confirmed in Hawaii, Florida, and Illinois. Now, health officials are saying they’re on it - and maybe put your Puerto Rico trip on pause if you’re pregnant.

WHAT TO SAY TO YOUR FRIEND WHO JUST GOT A FLAT SCREEN...

Busy tomorrow? This weekend’s all about who’s going to the Super Bowl. Aka the AFC and NFC Championship games. In the AFC corner, it’s the New England Patriots vs. the Denver Broncos. Rival QB’s Tom Brady and Peyton Manning are gunning to add another Super Bowl ring to their collections. And in the NFC corner, it’s the Arizona Cardinals vs. the Carolina Panthers . The Cards are hoping their wide receivers (name to drop: Larry Fitzgerald) can top the - almost - undefeated Panthers led by QB Cam Newton. After this weekend’s fantasy suite dates, it’s on to the final rose. Hike.
