QUOTE OF THE DAY

“Chance of infection very likely” – An expert talking about the water in Rio, where athletes from around the world will compete at the 2016 Summer Olympics. In water.

AGAIN.

THE STORY

Yesterday, there was another mass shooting. This time, it happened in San Bernardino, CA - a city near Los Angeles.

WHAT HAPPENED?

Gunmen opened fire in the middle of a holiday party at a center that serves people with developmental disabilities. At least 14 people were killed and more than a dozen were wounded.  Two suspects, a man and a woman, were then killed by police after a manhunt. Police say the male suspect attended the holiday party, left at some point, and then came back with what appears to be his wife or girlfriend to carry out the attack. Another person was detained, but police haven’t said if that person is connected to the shooting. After the attack, authorities found what appeared to be an explosive device inside the building.

This was the deadliest mass shooting in the US since Sandy Hook three years ago. Yesterday–combined with the recent shooting at a Planned Parenthood clinic in Colorado - has brought the gun control debate back into a harsher spotlight. Last night, President Obama called for stricter gun laws, saying we need to make shootings like this “rare as opposed to normal.”

REPEAT AFTER ME...

WHAT TO SAY WHEN YOU GET CALLED INTO A BIG MEETING…

Put me in, coach. Yesterday, NATO invited Montenegro  (cough, tiny country next to Serbia, cough) to join its international squad. Reminder: NATO’s a political and military alliance of 28 member countries (including the US, Turkey, and lots of Euros) who agree to have each other’s backs. Whose back is notably absent? Russia. Russia and NATO have a long history of beef over things like the Cold War and the most recent Ukraine crisis. And Russia’s been wary of NATO’s expanding influence. So cue Russia spitting out its vodka at the news that NATO added another country to the roster yesterday. This all comes as Russia and some NATO countries -  including the UK as of yesterday - are trying to figure out how (or if) they can work together to defeat ISIS through airstrikes. Speaking of which...yesterday, ISIS released a video that allegedly shows the execution of a Russian spy. Another reason why Russia did nyet have a good day.

WHAT TO SAY WHEN YOUR OFFICE IS DOING SOME ‘LEADERSHIP RESTRUCTURING’…

Someone’s boss is getting fired. In Brazil, that could mean the president. Yesterday, impeachment proceedings were opened against President Dilma Rousseff. You remember her as Brazil’s first female prez who threw serious shade at President Obama over NSA spying. There are a brazillion reasons why her second term as president has gotten a lot of criticism. One, the country’s going through its worst recession in decades. Two, top Brazilian officials have been accused of accepting bribes in a major kickback scheme. Three, there are accusations that Rousseff’s re-election last year was illegally financed. Add all ingredients and stir for lots of protests in Brazil . The impeachment process may take months. Still, it puts Rousseff in a Dilma pickle, and could bring political uncertainty to Latin America’s largest economy.

WHAT TO SAY WHEN YOUR FRIEND AND HER DOG START TO LOOK ALIKE…

Not a compliment. Or is it? Call in the Gollum experts.

THING TO KNOW

Momotombo: Not a noodle or milk bar. A volcano in Nicaragua that just started erupting for the first time in 100 years.
