US energy giant Chevron signs oil deal with Iraqi Kurdistan

BAGHDAD,— US energy giant Chevron has signed another oil exploration deal in Iraq's autonomous Kurdistan region, it said on Monday, one of several contracts between Kurds and foreign energy firms that have enraged Baghdad. The contract to explore the Qara Dagh field, in the south of the three-province region, is Chevron's third with Kurdish officials, who have signed a swathe of contracts with international oil companies to boost exploration and production of energy. Iraq's central government, however, has slammed the deals as illegal on the grounds that they were not approved by the...

DOMIZ CAMP, Duhok, Kurdistan region 'Iraq',— Abdulhamid sells ice cream to passersby at Domiz, Iraq's biggest camp for refugees fleeing violence in Syria, while Sidra reads an Arabic copy of "The Fox and The Crow" in class. But by pursuing their own path distinct from both the opposition and the regime, they are also colliding with Sunni rebels, who have increasingly clashed with Kurdish militiamen. Rebels have besieged a pocket of Kurdish towns and villages in the mainly Sunni Arab corner of northwest Syria for weeks, leading...

SLÊMANÎ, Kurdistan region 'Iraq',— Even though the Kurdistan Region's September polls are likely to be postponed, opposition groups are confident they will win the majority of votes in the next provincial elections, particularly in Slêmanî (Sulaimaniyah) province. New President, Same Iran?

By Hiwa Osman: The United States, Britain and their Western allies appear to have taken a collective sigh of relief following the landslide victory of moderate Hassan Rouhani in Iran's presidential election. The Western powers are clinging to the sliver of hope that Rouhani, 62, will address Western and regional concerns about Iran's controversial nuclear program, which has been a serious international headache for years. They also would like to see him improve political and human rights. But the West is failing to understand Rouhani's standing and power inside the core establishment: Among the...
