THE STORY

Over the weekend, a Russian plane crashed in Egypt. All 224 people on board were killed, most of them Russian citizens.

WHAT HAPPENED?

No one really knows yet. The plane was flying from a resort town in Egypt to St. Petersburg when it crashed shortly after takeoff. Russian officials initially said the plane broke up in midair, and that it was most likely a technical failure. But then this morning, the airline said the crash was probably caused by an “external influence.” Meanwhile, a militant group connected to ISIS claimed responsibility, saying it was payback for Russian airstrikes in Syria. But Russian and Egyptian officials are saying ‘doubt it,’ since that group isn’t thought to have the kind of weapons needed to carry out this attack.

Airlines from a few other countries say they aren’t flying over the area where it happened until they know the reason for the crash. While investigations are ongoing, Russia doesn’t exactly have a stellar air safety record. So this tragedy could be a red flag against airlines there.

WHAT TO SAY TO YOUR CO-WORKER WHO LOOKS TIRED AT THE OFFICE…

How about that World Series. Last night, the Kansas City Royals beat the New York Mets to take home the crown. The game went into 12 innings. It was all tied up at 2-2, and then the Royals scored five runs in the 12th. The Royals haven’t won a title in 30 years, and last year the team went all the way to the World Series and then lost. Redemption is sweet. And so are champagne showers.

WHAT TO SAY WHEN YOUR FANTASY TEAM IS PROJECTED TO LOSE BUT YOU STILL WIN...

Call me the comeback kid. Just like Turkey’s president. Yesterday, Turkish President Erdogan’s party took back power in the country’s parliamentary elections. This is the second time this year that Turkey’s had parliamentary elections, except last time, the country voted to give other parties more say. Which was a huge blow to Erdogan, who’s been in charge for 13 years – and has been aiming to change the constitution to hand himself more powers thank you very much. Instead of putting together a coalition government with parties that wanted to take him down a notch, Erdogan called for early elections. Fast forward to yesterday when voters handed back all of the seats Erdogan’s party had lost. Why the change of heart? Two recent suicide bombings in Turkey killed more than 130 people, and it looks like ISIS may be to blame. Erdogan argued that he’d be able to make the country a whole lot safer if his party had the majority in parliament. Now, he’s in the driver’s seat. Again.

WHAT TO SAY WHEN YOU AND YOUR ROOMMATE ARE LOOKING FOR SOMETHING TO MARATHON...

“Law & Order” throwback? Yesterday, former US senator and “Law & Order” star Fred Thompson died of lymphoma. He was 73. Before Thompson played an attorney on TV, he had some actual courtroom experience as an attorney during the Watergate scandal. Thompson also served eight years as a senator for Tennessee, and even tried out for prez as a GOP candidate in 2008. He leaves behind his wife and three kids.

WHAT TO SAY TO YOUR CO-WORKER WHO LOVES HER BURRITO BOWLS...

Bad news. Yesterday, Chipotle closed 43 restaurants in Seattle and Portland, OR. That’s because health officials say it looks like an E. coli outbreak in those areas might be linked to the chain. Fork, down. Officials say about 20 people are sick now, but they think there will be more cases. Reminder: E. coli is a bacteria that can cause food poisoning. For most people, that means lots of time in the bathroom – but it can be more serious for little kids and your grandparents. Chipotle says it closed the restaurants “out of an abundance of caution” and that it’s working with the health department to figure out what happened. Until then, they’re holding the extra guac.

WHAT TO SAY WHEN YOU TURN YOUR CALENDAR TO NOVEMBER...

Yep, still 2015. But everyone‘s got 2016 on the mind. The spotlight is on Former Gov. Jeb Bush (R-FL) and Sen. Marco Rubio (R-FL), who at last week’s GOP debate had their first Florida family feud after months of playing nice. Then on Friday, an internal memo from the Bush campaign was leaked, and it’s basically a Burn Book of Rubio’s weaknesses. Oops. That made for awkward TV, when yesterday Bush swore on “Meet the Press” that he “didn’t see” the memo. Meanwhile, the RNC isn’t feeling the love either. On Friday, it pulled out of plans to partner with NBC on a February debate, saying the moderators of last week’s debate on sister channel CNBC were “petty and mean-spirited in tone.” Meaning NBC PR is now googling ‘fruit baskets that say I’m sorry.’
